Environmental Technician/Specialist
Nature of Work:
This position is located in the Office of the Governor, Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The incumbent is directly supervised by the Laboratory Branch Manager and is expected to perform a wide variety of task such as data entry, operate a formal Quality Control program, sampling, analysis, monitoring, and assist with the supervision of Environmental Trainees and Technicians.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Compile all water quality data on a weekly basis and enter into the current DEQ water quality database.
Database must contain all records of physical, chemical, and biological analyses and measurements performed by the laboratory.
Must be able to use computer programs and software for maintaining water quality database.
Must be able to perform complex mathematical calculations, such as microbiological and chemical calculations.
Incumbent must have a minimum of two weeks training at a federal agency or state agency in chemical analysis of drinking water and 80 hours of on-the-job training in water chemistry at a certified laboratory acceptable to the state.
Must be able to pass an initial of demonstration of capability for chemistry analysis with limited supervision before being allowed to run samples independently.
Proficiency with the Omnion program software to perform water quality analysis, data management and reporting and other MS office products and specialty software.
Knowledge of EPA 353.2 method for the analysis of drinking water, groundwater, wastewater and marine water, field sampling and monitoring requirements and laboratory instrumentations.
Knowledge of all microbiological approved drinking water methods for the analysis of drinking water, groundwater, wastewater and marine water, field sampling and monitoring requirements and laboratory instrumentations.
Familiar with all approved microbiological and chemical methods for drinking water.
Perform advance analysis of chemical and microbiological contaminants in drinking water, groundwater, wastewater and marine water samples, field sampling and monitoring methods, and operating and calibration of laboratory instruments.
Supervises Environmental Trainees and Technicians in the Chemistry Section.
Analyzes/Prepares data results for water samples submitted by clients.
Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures and maintains the records at a level required for U.S. EPA certification.
Conducts in-house training for the laboratory trainees and technicians on Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures.
Participate in the enforcement of DEQ laws and regulations, and performs presentation of environmental activities at the discretion of the laboratory manager.
Develops presentations on approved drinking water methods using Microsoft Power Point and present the materials at DEQ-sponsored training session to school children and the general public as required.
Conducts inventory on laboratory supplies to ensure no shortfalls.
Position is under limited supervision and as a member of the DEQ Laboratory branch team is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative to handle technical issues while keeping the manager informed of progress and potentially technical issues.
Schedule workload and assignments to laboratory technicians and trainees to insure that sample holding times are not exceeded and that all QA/QC guidelines are met.
Must have 5 years of laboratory experience in a drinking water laboratory.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the lab manager.
