What is Nonpoint Source Pollution
Nonpoint Source Pollution is pollution that is caused by rainfall moving over and through the ground, picking up natural and man-made pollutants depositing them into our coastal and ground waters. Nonpoint Source Pollution impacts our island environment, resulting in:

- Beach closures (red flags notices)
- Contamination of groundwater
- Threatens marine life
What causes Nonpoint Source Pollution? Upland activities such as:
- Land clearing without a DEQ permit
- Construction site-soil matter on the road
- Improper storage and or disposal of oil
- boating maintenance such as cleaning, painting, fueling
- animal wastes
- Improper pesticide application
What can Nonpoint Source Pollution be prevented?
- Dispose of waste properly
- Monitor and inspect septic tanks regularly
- Engage in revegetation (planting)
- Read labels for pesticide or other chemical use (use only what you need or is required)
- Respond to public requests for information and ideas
- Sweep roads and walkways
- Substitute toxic cleaners for natural products
- Reduce vehicle use (carpool)
